Apple Rejects Adobe Flash (Again)

Apple And Adobe Continue Conflict

iphone_noFlashWhen the gadget wizards at Apple released the first iPhone in 2007, consumers everywhere went a bit bonkers for the do-it-all device, but Web developers noticed what seemed to be a glaring omission from the phone’s feature set: support for Adobe Flash. As one of the tech industry’s leading Web browser plug-ins, Flash powers more online video and animation that any other software. Since the iPhone’s release, thousands of tech reviewers and every-day users have issued complaints and requests to Apple regarding the iPhone’s inability to support Flash-based content, but Apple has remained firm in its decision to exclude Flash from the world’s most popular smartphone.

Last month, Apple further snubbed Adobe with the release of its first tablet computer, the iPad, which also does not support Flash-based video transfer or animation. The backlash from Adobe has not gone unnoticed, and though both Apple and Adobe have remained relatively poised in their escalating conflict, the release of the iPad, which is marketed as a more full-featured Internet browser than its pocket-sized counterpart, has seemingly fanned the flames.

Adobe recently issued a converting program for Flash developers that allows Flash-based applications to be easily ported to various mobile operating systems, including Google’s Android, RIM’s Blackberry, and Apple’s iPhone. In what has been called an aggressive maneuver (if not full-blown attack) from CEO Steve Jobs, Apple has blocked all applications created with the Flash video transfer converter. Mike Chambers, Adobe’s product manager for Flash video, said in his blog that Apple wants to “tie developers down to their platform, and restrict their options to make it difficult for developers to target other platforms.” Apple spokeswoman Truly Miller responded in an unusually candid manner for the typically tight-lipped company, saying that Apple products support “open and standard” technologies like the video transfer used in the markup language HTML5. She went on to say that “Adobe’s Flash is closed and proprietary.”

At least partially in response to the demand from iPhone users, many Web developers have begun to remove Flash content from their sites. Apple is quick to point out that several mainstream websites, including CNN, Reuters, The New York Times, Major League Baseball, Vimeo, The White House, Virgin America, Flickr, and Sports Illustrated are all currently Flash-free, opting to use HTML5 video instead. Even Apple’s semi-rival Google has made changes to YouTube to allow iPhone users to watch videos on the site.

Despite its exclusion from the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, Flash remains the industry-leading interactive Web platform for video transfer. It seems highly unlikely that Apple will change its position, but future developments in the conflict are expected to unravel over the next year.

The quality was better than we expected and we love the online photo albums. Very straight forward and easy to understand. Helene – Fairfax, VA – March 2010

It’s great to re-live those long-ago moments! I’ve looked at the DVD’s which you converted from VHS tapes for me. They were taped 20 -30 years ago and we hadn’t watched them in at least 15-20 years.  The quality of the transfer was very good. We really liked the musical synopsis of each disc. You’ll probably receive another order from me later in the year, and yes, I would recommend you to others. Carl – Portland, CT – March 2010

I am extremely satisfied with the work ScanDigital performed. My home movies are clear and labeled, more organized than the VHS I have been trying to organize for years! I thought the process was easy to use and the website is great because I can check on the status of my order. I would definitely recommend you to family and friends (and in fact already have). I know you treated my memories as if they were your own. Thank you very much. Shannon – Medfield, MA – March 2010

Very convenient and fast; good quality. I’ve already recommended others. Easy to understand, although I had to call to verify scanning images on multi-photo pages, it was easy to understand over the phone.  Barclay – Los Angeles, CA – March 2010

This was a very positive experience.  I appreciated the ongoing communication letting me know where you were in the process at all times.  They arrived back home safe and sound and in perfect condition – thank you so much for your great service! My parent’s 58th anniversary is approaching and I plan on scanning photos for them as a gift. Dawn – Bradenton, FL – March 2010

We are very satisfied with the service and will most likely use your service again.  We have also passed on your web site to several family members. Stephen – Bel Air, MD – March 2010

Very happy with the quality, not to mention the care taken to ensure that memoirs are handled in the best care.  I especially liked the fact that I could track my order.  I actually have additional video and photo transfers I would like to send your way!  Amy – Nashville, TN – March 2010

I was pleased to receive my order in a timely manner and felt it was good quality.  Your website was easy to maneuver and clear in the pricing. I particularly liked the various communications that I received updating me continuously about the progress of the order. Yes, I will brag about having preserved memories from my slides through your services to others. The disc is going to make a great gift to my daughter. Claudine – Lakewood, CO – March 2010

Absolutely; the quality was wonderful for the large order. Also, you have lovely people working for you. I had, from this alone, added your firm’s link to my FB page. Susan – Estelline, SD – March 2010

I LOVE MY VIDEOS… I even called to say thank you for a job well done, so I hope that you got my message! :) Again, THANK YOU for preserving my memories!!! Just sent out another order today! :) Noreen – Shawnee, KS – March 2010

I was completely satisfied with all aspects of the service on my recent order.  I had about 90 extremely old (50 years) slides, which needed to be digitized for a reunion.   Service at your facility was very friendly and efficient. I asked for the order to be completed within 2 weeks if possible, and was amazed to be notified 2 days later that the order had been completed.  The quality of the digitized results was better than I expected. I would certainly highly recommend your service to anyone I know who needs to have old slides digitized.  Thanks for such good work. Lenard – Santa Monica, CA – March 2010

As far as your service goes I am pleased with the transfers you done with my old home movies, the quality is good and the prices are fair. I have kept your address on file and will pass it on to anyone who wants transfers. Thank you for everything. Hugh – Washington, MI – March 2010

I love Scan Digital and recommend it to friends…  I actually found you guys through work – you scanned a bunch of Jackass images for us @ MTV. Yes – scanning negs is a pain – people lose photos all the time and you guys offer awesome, awesome quality at a very fair price. David – Los Angeles, CA – March 2010

Thought everything went very smoothly. So easy to do and invaluable. Cate – Venice, CA – March 2010

Great experience. Planning several thousand picture order for entire library of family pics. You can thank Mac magazine for their positive review on your firm.  Jeffrey – Shaker Heights, OH – March 2010

You did a great job. Very clean. I’m working on two more orders, lots of slides. Thanks. Howard – Owings Mills, MD – March 2010

Overall I had a good experience with ScanDigital. I found that the process of creating an account and figuring out how to package the film canisters and send them worked well. I’ve watched the DVD’s and think that they are great.  I was surprised that there was even a “highlight” version at the end of each DVD that I could add music to.  Jerry – Farmington, MN – March 2010

I was quite pleased with the quality of the pictures I received and with the way you kept me informed about the progress of my large order. I emailed your customer service department about my questions and they were helpful in clearing up my confusion. Cherlyn – Rome, GA – March 2010

We sent three super 8’s to be converted. We have received two of them back and LOVE the job you did. I had called your support line in order to get help on what I needed to do. They were really helpful. The entire experience was painless. I can recommend your company (and will) to anyone who asks. Thanks for a job well done. Mary – Brooklyn, NY – March 2010

The service was great and very affordable. The representative I worked with was knowledgeable and helpful. Loved the images.Gordon – Alexandria, VA – March 2010

This is my second time using ScanDigital. Again I was very pleased and amazed at the quality.  You have an attentive team with exceptional customer service.  I am a very happy customer and I have been recommending ScanDigital to all my friends.

Thank you for delivering a great product. Donna – Medford, MA – March 2010

Baby on board? Put more water in your tank.

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Pregnant-Woman-Drinking-Water It’s been a while since I was pregnant (thank goodness), but some things don’t change. Yes, all kinds of advice has changed over the last 10 years, and today’s toys and accessories are a lot cooler than when I was in the market. But the advice to drink enough water when you’re pregnant has not changed; if anything, the word is getting stronger.

Why? We know that drinking water is good for our skin, organs and brain. But it plays an extra special role with mommies-to-be:

  • Water helps carry nutrients through the body and to the baby. It helps the amniotic sack grow and replenishes the fluid when it is lost.
  • Drinking ample amounts of water helps keep pregnant women hydrated, which is critical. Dehydration can lead to contractions and even pre-term labor. Not good.
  • The more water you drink, the less water your body retains. When you deprive your body of water, it goes into crisis mode and begins to store more of it. Often the bloating and swelling common with pregnancy can be lessened or even eliminated by drinking enough water.
  • Drinking water helps prevent bladder infections by flushing away harmful bacteria. Not fun to have, especially when pregnant!water bottles

Moms-to-be need to keep water bottles handy at all times. But don’t settle for wasteful disposable ones. Buy reusable of course. Reduce WaterWeek is ideal because it makes it easy–and fashionable, which is hard to accomplish when pregnant–to get your 64+ ounces of water per day. Cheers!

The Next iPhone Revealed In Photos

iPhone Prototype Abandoned In Redwood City Bar

iphoneOn March 18th 2010, an Apple Software Engineer named Gray Powell accidentally left a new prototype iPhone in a beer garden called Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City. Powell was out with friends celebrating his 27th birthday when he left the device, which was housed in a plastic casing to make it look like a current generation iPhone 3GS, on the bar before leaving for the night.

The last time Powell saw his next-gen iPhone, he used it to update his Facebook status. “I underestimated how good German beer is,” he wrote. Apparently, he also underestimated German beer’s effect on his short-term memory, because he abandoned the top-secret prototype, which eventually ended up in the hands the editors of the technology and consumer electronics weblog Gizmodo.

Part of the Gawker Media network run by Nick Denton, Gizmodo has been known for being generally pro-Apple, and Steve Jobs has gone so far as to say it’s his favorite gadget blog. But that didn’t stop Gizmodo from paying the prototype’s unnamed finder a cool $5,000 for the device, or from releasing a complete scoop on the new iPhone’s design, inside and out, including scanned photos and videos.

Apple can’t be too happy about the situation, though it is not known at this time what action the company plans to take to regain control of the iPhone product news cycle. Apple usually makes announcements regarding new versions of the iPhone hardware in late spring, but has remained silent on the topic of Gary Powell’s big mistake. Apple is known for its exacting security protocols; many prototype gadgets are even kept bolted down behind armored doors. Apparently the company had allowed some employees to conduct testing out in the field for this new iPhone prototype, but the phones were to be disguised as current iPhone models, and kept close at hand.

The new device seems to offer some new features including a front facing camera, a flash bulb for taking photos, and a new sleeker design. Gizmodo has published a series of stories, scanned photo galleries, and videos all about “the next iPhone,” which can be seen at http://gizmodo.com/tag/iphone4.

Rare Marilyn Monroe Photos On Sale At Auction

Previously Unseen Marilyn Monroe Photos Scanned To Digital, For Sale

Two-Day Las Vegas Auction Boasts Classic Film Memorabilia

monroePreviously unseen photos of Marilyn Monroe are among the hundreds of pieces of film memorabilia being sold by Julien’s Auctions at the “Hollywood Legends” summer auction this June. Taking place on Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, the auction boasts original scripts, costumes, props, and photos from some of Hollywood’s biggest films, both classic and contemporary. The Hollywood Legends collection has toured the world, attracting attention from collectors throughout Europe and Asia.

The photos of Monroe, which have all been scanned to digital to allow the auctioneers to appeal to a wider audience, include snapshots taken on the set of the 1959 hit comedy “Some Like It Hot,” which co-starred Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon and remains one of Marilyn’s most iconic films. The never-before-seen vintage slides from the set, all of which have been scanned to digital, also depict co-stars Curtis and Lemon in their now-infamous drag costumes. The full-color images shed light on director Billy Wilder’s surprising decision to shoot the film in black-and-white, as the effect of the leading actors’ female disguises is much less convincing in color. Marilyn Monroe’s personal copy of the movie’s script is also on sale, and expected to fetch over $10,000.

Also included in the auction are several items from Monroe’s personal and public life, including the star’s personal bottle of Channel #5 perfume, several items of Pucci clothing, and even furniture from her Brentwood home. Other collectibles include Marilyn’s skis, her umbrella, her prompt book from her final (unfinished) film project, “Something’s Got to Give”, and more prints of candid snapshots that have been scanned to digital.
Highlights from the collection will be on exhibit at Planet Hollywood starting on June 14th. For more information on the auction, please visit www.juliensauctions.com. To view the photos from the set of Some Like It Hot, click here.

Not Big Enough? Digital IMAX Theatres Cause Controversy

Digital Film Transfers Cause Stir In IMAX Digital Theatre Systems

Retrofitted Multiplexes Don’t Bring The Magic

imax_multiplex_theatreA lot has changed for the folks at IMAX over the last two years. When The Dark Knight opened in 2008, it played in 94 IMAX theaters across the country, all projecting the company’s proprietary, super-high-resolution 70mm film. When Avatar opened in December of 2009, it played in over 220 IMAX theaters, many of which used the digital version of IMAX which started rolling out in 2008 as part of the company’s dramatic expansion campaign. While Digital Imax systems eliminate the need for costly film reels and facilitate cheaper distribution of IMAX movies, the digital film transfers used for the new digital projection standard suffer dramatic losses in resolution during the digitization process.

Digital film transfers are a great way to preserve home movies and other film-based material intended for personal use. But the inherent loss in resolution that occurs when moving from film (which resolves images on the chemical level) to digital (which uses a finite and relatively small number of physical pixels) can become problematic when the images are being projected onto a screen that is 50 to75 feet tall, as is often the case in IMAX theaters.

Screen size is also a somewhat controversial issue for IMAX, as the company continues to retrofit the nation’s multiplexes with scaled-down digital IMAX theaters, many of which use screens as small as 47 feet wide by 24 feet tall to display the relatively low-res digital film transfers. As a point of comparison, traditional IMAX theaters can be as large as 117 feet wide by 96 feet tall, and rely solely on high-res film for projection. Many moviegoers who pay a premium of as much as $5 for IMAX tickets over the cost of regular movie tickets leave unimpressed by the so-called “IMAX Experience” available at their local multiplexes. These scaled-down IMAX theaters often screens that are not much larger than the ones in ordinary theaters. The IMAX retrofit removes the first few rows of seating, and moves the screen closer to the viewers so that the screen appears larger than it would in a traditional setting.

Because these smaller, lower-resolution digital IMAX theaters are not labeled or treated differently from traditional IMAX theaters, moviegoers looking for the nearest IMAX showing have no way of knowing whether their extra $5 will really give them the traditional large-scale IMAX experience they have come to expect. This controversy was escalated when comedian and “Parks and Recreation” costar Aziz Ansari blogged about his disappointing experience seeing Star Trek in the Burbank’s AMC multiplex’s digital IMAX theater.

Despite mixed reactions from some audiences, IMAX continues to put Imax technology into two to three new theaters across the U.S. each week.

I sent you some of our family videos from 1988 through 1991 because my daughter saw your Groupon coupon, and for years I had been saying I wanted to do something to make those old videos easier to watch and to prevent them from fading away on video.  I am so happy I did!  We just watched three of the dvd’s you made for us when our kids were all home for Easter and we laughed and laughed!  I especially like how you wrote the titles and dates on the cover and how you included all of the pictures from each section so it is easy to see what we are going to watch.  The quality was great.  I have already told our extended family how much we like them.  I plan to send you more of our old videos now that I know how well this worked out.  My mom has trays and trays of slides and hopefully I can help her send those off too, to be made into dvd’s.  Thanks a lot for your excellent service.  You have provided us with lots of fun last weekend, and in the future, reliving happy memories!  Kathy – Flint Hill, MO – March 2010

The order was great! Everything looks great. Cindy – Topeka, KS – March 2010

April Is All About Glee

April Is All About Glee

Buzz Builds As Hit Show Prepares For Big Return

gleeThe month of April has only just begun and already it’s clear that this is the month of “Glee.” The hit musical comedy has been on a 4-month hiatus since its mid-season finale aired in December of last year, but the show returns to Fox on April 13th, much to the delight of the show’s enthusiastic fan-base. The hype around the show’s return has created a new surge of internet buzz, including hundreds of behind-the-scenes, on-set photos appearing on big names sites like latimes.com, after being candidly snapped and scanned to digital.

But perhaps the biggest buzz-worthy story is the show’s nationwide casting calls and online auditions via MySpace video, which has attracted attention and raised high hopes across the country. Glee’s executive producers have begun a nationwide casting search to fill new roles for the show’s second season, and any performer between the ages of 16 and 26 can now upload a short audition video including an introduction explaining why he or she wants to be on Glee, and a performance of one of Glee’s hit tracks like Avril Lavigne’s “Keep Holding On” or Kanye West’s “Gold Digger.”

Glee’s talented cast and surprisingly (and refreshingly) witty writing has led to success and critical praise, including four Golden Globe nominations, and a win for best comedy or musical television series. Other ingredients to the show’s success include the show’s high-school setting and archetypical characters, which create the perfect recipe for drama. Add some Broadway-style musical numbers and buzzing sexual tension, and you have a hit on your hands.

Another possible reason for the show’s success is the popularity of performance-based competition shows like “American Idol.” Taking the concept of a musical competition and turning it into a work of fiction provides instant appeal for fans of many genres. Chief among Glee’s fans are musical theater enthusiasts and Broadway buffs, a new generation of which has blossomed in the wake of youth-oriented Broadway hits such as “’Spring Awakening,” and “Rent.”

To get in on the Glee action, visit MySpace.com before April 26th to submit (or view) video auditions, or just search the Web for snapshots that have been scanned to digital and sneak-peak videos that have leaked onto YouTube.

For the Love of Green: Smart Eco-friendly Shopping Tips

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

earthday

In honor of Earth Day (it should be a month!), here are some great shopping tips that will help you stay on your “green” course. If you’re like me, spring is a great time to clean out closets, and replenish with new items—only if needed, of course. With kids, I know it’s always needed, since they seem to grow like weeds. And with Mother’s and Father’s Day around the corner, shopping for gifts is probably on your “to-do” list as well.  And the good part, not only will these tips help you be more green, they may just save you some green too.

  1. Get organized: Write down all your gifts and consolidate your shopping trips. Don’t drive to far away stores to pick up one or two things. That’s a big waste of emissions. Plan to hit a few stores on one big trip.
  2. Bring reusable shopping bags. These bags are not just for the grocery store; why not bring them to the mall as well? Makes good sense.
  3. Shop online. This is a bit obvious, but it’s worth repeating. Because you are not driving anywhere, you’re saving on fossil fuels and emissions.
  4. Buy locally. Look for vendors who are local—farmers, craftspeople, etc.—and support them. You know their products didn’t travel across an ocean to get to you. Energy is saved and pollution is reduced.
  5. Green gift wrapping: Use recycled papers, newspapers or fabric to wrap and decorate packages. Make bows out of fabric ribbon instead of the plastic kind; these take a long time to decompose and can give off toxic fumes when burned.
  6. Rechargeable batteries: Consider buying rechargeable batteries and include a charger as part of the gift. This will cut down dramatically on the amount of discarded batteries that end up polluting the earth.
  7. Make it with love: Make homemade gifts, and if they’re edible, even better. This way, you are showing great affection (it takes thought and effort to cook/bake/assemble something) and when the gift is consumed, all that is left over is a handy jar or container.
  8. Save the paper: It’s amazing how much wrapping paper can be saved with a little careful ripping. Especially on big packages. There is easily enough usable paper to be saved for small packages next year.
  9. Give green gifts: Help spread the word about the importance of saving our earth. Look for gifts with eco-labels, made out of recycled products or that help people become more green. Reduce WaterWeek bottles are attractive and giving them will encourage the recipient to (hopefully) stop buying wasteful disposable water bottles.
  10. Gift Cards: There’s the constant debate whether gift cards are the lazy man’s way out, with that aside, it is a great green solution. Your loved one gets to pick out what they really want, reducing the amount of unwanted items ending up in the Goodwill bin.

I’m sure there are many more ways to be green as you hit the stores. The best tip is to make sure everything has a purpose—every item, every car trip, every box. Keep thinking green and you may save some green.

Taiwan’s Got Talent

Taiwanese Singer Lin Yu Chun Lights Up The Web

taiwan talentYouTube provides a nearly endless supply of video entertainment, from candid home videos to weekly video blogs to digital video transfers of just about anything that makes waves in pop culture. Every so often a new internet sensation will pop up, as videos spread like wildfire through office buildings, college campuses, and coffee shops across the nation. The latest sensation comes all the way from Taiwan. A digital video transfer of Taiwan’s hit singing competition show “Super Star Avenue” has been climbing the Google rankings in the past week, as 22-year-old Lin Yu Chun gains a somewhat unexpected worldwide stardom. Lin Yu Chun’s performance of “I Will Always Love You” (as performed by Whitney Houston) may ultimately garner him more than the million-dollar prize awarded to the winner of “Super Star Avenue,” Taiwan’s version of “American Idol.”

Lin Yu Chun, whose baby face and chubby frame have earned him the nickname “Little Fatty” on the Taiwanese program, has a voice that soars on the high notes and soulfully navigates all the embellishments of Whitney Houston’s 1993 cover of Dolly Parton’s timeless ballad. His “surprise” performance has been compared to that of Susan Boyle, whose first audition on the show “Britain’s Got Talent” earned her instant fame, due as much to her feisty attitude and unconventional appearance as to her big, fabulous voice. Various versions of Boyle’s performance have been viewed on YouTube nearly 150 million times, and she now has a record deal.

Could Lin Yu Chun be the next Susan Boyle? Boyle’s voice was not the only thing that landed her success. Fans responded to the singer’s compelling life story – when she auditioned she was nearly 48 years old, unemployed, and unmarried. She even claimed never to have been kissed. Yet her undeniable spunk and persistence to achieve her dream made her immensely likable. She also had a champion in judge Simon Cowell, who helped promote her singing career and prepare her for stardom. Boyle went on to sell millions of albums in the United States in 2009, where foreign acts typically struggle to break out. Lin Yu Chun is not a native speaker of English, and the transition from Asian sensation to American star is perhaps more difficult to make, but even Simon Cowell can’t deny that Britain isn’t the only country that’s got talent.
