On paper, Keegan Gibbs is a pretty typical Southern California kid in his 20s; he enjoys spending time on the beach, hanging out with friends and surfing— but he also happens to be a world-class photographer.

After graduating from film school, Keegan knew that he did not want to work within the film industry. At a crossroads, Keegan’s mom suggested that he give still photography a try and his interest in photography was instantly sparked. Gibbs first started gaining recognition for his photos in the early 2000s when he started documenting his friends who happened to be well-known graffiti artists. Keegan went where, practically, no photographer had dared to go before by scaling rooftops and billboards alongside the artists. His photographs depict the adrenaline, risk and excitement that are coupled with the act of graffiti artists. His pictures were especially sharp, but not overly stylized or edited, giving them an authentic, well-balanced feel.

After a few years of following and trespassing alongside his vandalistic friends, Keegan decided to focus on more laid-back endeavors and started more heavily documenting the two activities he likes most: surfing and hanging out on the beach. His photos often depict happy beach-goers and adolescent punk rockers in candid moments. Often utilizing the beautiful landscapes of his hometown of Malibu, CA, many of his newer photographs seem to be focused on tasteful saturation, which contrasts most of his earlier work which was shot at night with little to no lights, and often in black-and-white.

Keegan is currently living in Malibu, CA traveling and surfing as much as he can, all while taking a bunch of great photographs. He has also been enacted into the infamous Seventh Letter Crew, a coveted collective of artists and photographers based out of Los Angeles.
