Broadway Photographer Leo Friedman Dies

Leo Friedman Dies At 92

Broadway Photographer Was Known For Capturing Movement In Still Photos

Photographer Leo Friedman, who made his career capturing Broadway stars in action during the golden age of the 1950s and 1960s, has died. He was 92. The photo seen here, which was scanned to digital by the New York Times, is one of Friedman’s most famous snapshots. It depicts the effervescent Carol Lawrence and Larry Kert as lovebirds Tony and Maria in “West Side Story.” Taken on a street near Friedman’s New York studio, the photo became the enduring emblem of the musical after having been chosen to appear on the covers of the playbill and original cast recording. It remains a signature image of Friedman’s impressive career.

Friedman’s career was at its height during the peak period of Broadway glamour. The 1950s and 1960s were also significant in the history of photography, as the expanded professional use of 35 millimeter photography allowed photographers to capture a sense of motion in their still pictures. Friedman was a ubiquitous presence in and around New York theaters during this time, photographing more than 800 shows including “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Cabaret,” “My Fair Lady,” and more. His photos show Lucille Ball marching with a bass drum in “Wildcat,” Laurence Olivier hoofing in “The Entertainer,” and Barbra Streisand making her Broadway debut in “I Can Get It for You Wholesale.” Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Bob Fosse, Sammy Davis Jr., and Lena Horne were just a few of the stars immortalized on stage by Friedman’s uniquely in-the-moment photographs.

As a freelance photographer, Friedman made it his specialty to capture actors in motion, both in rehearsal and during performance. He was hired by all the top magazines and newspapers, press agents, and producers, all of whom appreciated his ability to depict the movement of acting. When hired by a producer to take official photographs of a show, he would photograph a show scene by scene, but going backward from the end after a full performance. Friedman often attributed his success to his ability to work with high-maintenance stars. Many stars, such as Katharine Hepburn, developed personal friendships with Friedman after working with him professionally.

Los Angeles Times Celebrates 130 Years In Photos

New Digital L.A. Times Photo Gallery Documents Over A Century In Pictures

Gallery Also Includes Historical Front Pages

The powerful and tragic photo seen here shows a Hermosa Beach couple in 1955, just moments after learning that their 19-month-old child had been swept out to sea. Los Angeles Times photographer Jack Gaunt won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for press photography for capturing this image, which the Pulitzer committee described as “poignant and profoundly moving.” Gaunt was at his beachfront home that morning, when a neighbor shouted “Something’s happening on the beach!” The photographer instinctively grabbed his Rolliflex camera and sprinted to the water’s edge, where he captured the haunting image even before knowing what was transpiring. The photo appeared on the front page of The Times on the following morning. In Gaunt’s 2007 Times Obituary, his daughter recalled that this image, which won Gaunt so much acclaim, was hard to bear for the famed photographer.

Gaunt was one of many notable photographers to work for the Los Angeles Times during its 130 years (and counting) in print. Other Pulitzer Prize winners include Clarence Williams (1998), Don Bartletti (2003), Carolyn Cole (2004), and Barbara Davidson, who won the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography this year. Although not present at the paper’s inception in 1881, photography quickly became an integral part of the Times experience. Now celebrating its 130th anniversary, the Los Angeles Times is recognizing its rich history with a new gallery of historical photos which have been scanned to digital for all to enjoy on the Times website. The times notes that “the nature of news and photography has moved from the printing press and darkroom to the digital frontier,” and plans to join the two media to celebrate more than a century’s worth of images of significant events in the region’s history.

This digital gallery offers a glimpse of Southern California history as it developed, documenting “the opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the rise of Hollywood, natural disasters, wars, the political careers of presidents and deaths of notable figures.” These images were captured by some of the most acclaimed photographers in the history of journalism. The gallery also includes some of the most memorable front pages in Times history, scanned to digital in high resolution. See how the world read about the sinking of the Titanic, the end of World War I and World War II, and other world-changing events.

“We were very satisfied with the results of the scanning of 60+ year old slides – and the care that was taken during processing and returning them to us. Thank you very much for providing your services – the result is something that is not only personally interesting, but something that we can share as a family. When the first batch arrived, my mother, myself and my 30-year-old son viewed them together. That experience was priceless as we shared our family history. We are looking forward to working our way through the boxes of slides and photos in the garage.” Lynn – CA

“I did have a good experience with your service!” Shannon – OR

My husband and I had a trip planned to Kyrgyzstan to visit our daughter and her family in August when I realized it would be wonderful to take a copy of her wedding with us. We received our entire order and were able to bless our daughter with the DVD.  She was so excited and our grandchildren couldn’t wait to see it! France Helps Philippines Restore And Digitize Rare Films

French Ambassador Strikes Deal To Upgrade Filipino National Film Archives

Film Development Council of the Philippines Aims To Rescue Film Treasures From Extinction

In an effort to restore and preserve an important segment of Filipino culture, French Ambassador to the Philippines Thierry Borja de Mozota has teamed up wth Briccio Santos, Chairman of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), in a landmark deal to upgrade the facilities and capabilities of the Filipino National Film Archives. Santos and de Mozota recently signed a Declaration of Intent in which France promises to lend monetary and technological assistance to the Philippines. The French National Archives, which houses what could be the largest and most systemized archival collection in the world, will be overseeing several large projects including the restoration and digitization of many rare films. These digital film transfers will prevent thousands of films from being lost to further damage, and lost to history.

The French ambassador and FDCP chairman sealed the deal at the ambassador’s Forbes Park residence, where visiting officials from the National Center of Cinema under the French Ministry of Culture gathered on November 15th, 2011. Those present at the signing included Stephanie Rabourdin, regional audiovisual attaché of France for Southeast Asia, and Olivier Guillemot, financial and legal director of the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (National Center of Cinematography and the moving image). Béatrice de Pastre, director of the archives collection of the Centre, was also present.

The Declaration of Intent will be a major boon to the Filipino National Film Archives, which has been promised support in the “full development of FDCP’s film archive system in accordance with the French model” by the French government, via its embassy in Makati City. FDCP technicians will receive extensive archiving and audiovisual training, and will have access to substantive film archiving equipment. The deal also requires the FDCP to find, restore, rehabilitate, and safely store all endangered, rare and classic films produced in the Philippines that are considered part of the national heritage. Once these old films are restored to near-pristine condition, they are to be transferred to digital format. These digital film transfers will include films dating back to the prewar period and the “golden age of Philippine cinema” from the 1940s to the 1960s. Many of these films have not been seen by the public since they were first screened decades ago.

Washington State’s Rural Artifacts Scanned To Digital For History Website

Rural Heritage Project Aims To Preserve And Share Washington History

Historic Photos And Documents Tell Forgotten Stories

For the last five years, the Washington State Library has been sponsoring the Rural Heritage Project, a joint effort among the smallest libraries in the state to gather and preserve community history. The project is the brainchild of Gary Bortel, a Westport librarian who now works for the Washington State Library. Bortel had the idea to collect the cultural buried treasure from Washington’s rural communities – old photos and other documents – and scan the photos to digital in order to build a website accessible to all. This would allow Washingtonians to share their heritage with the world.

The collections include a wide variety of historic treasures, including formal portraits of town residents from more than a century ago, and photos of various rural towns before they were transformed, first by irrigation and then by modernization. Of particular note are the postcards depicting historic floods. Photos show town barbershops and bakeries being lapped by encroaching waves for the only time in recorded history. These clues to the histories of the state’s smallest communities have been collected from basements, attics, thrift stores, and garage sales. Many of these treasures have been lost, forgotten, or in the possession of just one family or person for 100 years or more. In order to allow everyone to share in the richness of these historical artifacts, some suggested a museum.

But Bortel realized there was another solution that would allow even more people to enjoy the history of rural Washington. That solution was of course to scan the historic documents and photos to digital, and put them on a website for all to enjoy. Washingtonians were encouraged to retrieve their own personal artifacts so they could be scanned or photographed for inclusion on the website. Bortel pitched his idea to colleagues at the state library. Eventually, a $50,000 annual grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Service led to the founding of the Rural Heritage project in 2006, with the goal of preserving and sharing pieces of Washington State history that might otherwise be lost. Now, some 25 libraries across Washington State have historic documents online, and seven more have begun compiling their collections.

“I think your service was great. It’s a real pleasure having my best slides available for viewing on my various electronic devices. I have indeed suggested your service to my friends. “I must tell you I could not have been more pleased with your company’s product to me. The quality of film was amazing! Additionally all the “extra” such as the ability to make a storyboard and photos brought tears to my eyes. The films that were restored showed both of my parents when they were a young married couple and when my sisters and I were babies. We had never seen these before. Both of our parents have been deceased for a long time so these films are priceless. Thank you for bringing memories that will last forever for our family members. Your company is an amazing one….great customer service! I will use you again. Thank you.” Debbe – WA

“I am very pleased with your service and do plan to use you again.  Sorting and preparing my photos wasn’t as much work as I expected.  It was more fun than I expected too. The resulting scans are excellent; the online viewing was a real bonus. I think the value is good because of the quality of work.  Sure, I could scan each photo myself, but the quality would be poorer and the labor involved is not worth it. Good luck and I look forward to my next order results.” Kathy – ID

“I just placed an additional order with ScanDigital. I think you have a very user friendly website/ order process and have recommended you to several friends.” Chris – PA

“Just wanted to let you know that your service was great!  I had several hundred treasured thirty-year-old photos that were literally fading away, as well as a wedding video I was concerned about upgrading to a DVD.  I am very pleased with the results.  It was reassuring to be able to check my order status on the website now and then to see how things were coming along.  I would definitely recommend your company to others.  Thank you!” Cheryl – MD

“The quality of the scans I received was excellent.” Nigel – CO

A Radical Way To Organize School Lunches

Let me start out by saying that this method isn’t for everyone.

And remember, kids taste buds are not like adults. They eat things we would never find palatable. (Sour gummy worms anyone?)

So, read over this lunch organizing method, wince a bit, and then try it out on your kids. You have nothing to lose and lots and lots of time to gain.

School Lunches Made Easy

  1. Determine what type of sandwich you child likes. We alternate weekly between peanut butter, ham & cheese & cream cheese on a bagel.
  2. On Sunday night, assemble all the sandwiches you need for the week. Yes, I said the week.
  3. Wrap each sandwich individually in foil.
  4. If you have more than one child, write their name on the foil covered sandwich with a sharpie.
  5. Put them into a cubbie in the freezer. Yes, I said the freezer.
  6. Each morning, your child grabs a sandwich and packs it into his lunchbox.
  7. Do the same with dessert. Bake a batch of cookies/brownies on Sunday, package them up, put in a cubbie in the freezer, each morning your child grabs one.
  8. Make the other elements of their lunches just as easy for them to grab. water bottle, banana, juice box, whatever.
  9. Each morning they pack their complete lunch while you look on from your perch at the table with a steaming cup of coffee in hand. Smile lovingly down upon them. They are learning life skills.
  10. Result – you spend a few minutes on Sunday night creating the elements of their lunch, they spend a few minutes each morning assembling the elements into their lunch boxes.

Done. Now, I know you’re thinking I’m crazy. This won’t work. The sandwich will still be frozen. They won’t like it.

I’m not crazy. It will work. The sandwich will thaw out in time. They will eat it.

Remember, even though you or I would cringe when faced with a previously frozen sandwich, your child won’t. Give it a shot. Anyway, which is better for them – frozen processed food from the school cafeteria, or a sandwich made with wholesome ingredients from home? It may not be perfection in a lunch, but do they really care?

Try it for a week. Don’t tell them, just give it a shot. See what happens. All you have to loose is your lunch rush in the morning.

P.S. – One last tidbit – my husband makes & packs all the lunches on Sunday night.

This and more radical like minded ideas are described in my book “30 Days To An Organized Home”. It’s available as an actual hold in your hand, a eBook or on any Kindle-like device reader you have. Click here to buy it now!

Microsoft Takes Pre-Orders For $8,400 ‘Table Computer’

New Microsoft Surface Table To Be Released Early Next Year

Table Computer Uses Advanced Sensor Tech Developed With Samsung

“Gee, I really wish I could search the Internet, watch a digital video transfer, and make a virtual finger painting on a large touch-screen coffee table.” I’m sure you’ve thought it – we all have…right? Well, maybe not. Nevertheless, Microsoft thinks this could be the home computer of the future. The futuristic-looking coffee table seen here is the second-generation of Microsoft’s “table computer.” This “Microsoft Surface computer” concept has been around for a few years now, but the newest model pictured here won’t be released until January of next year, a full 12 months after making its public debut at the January 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. If you’re an anxious would-be customer, you can now preorder the new device, which was built in partnership with Samsung, for a cool $8,400.

This enormous tablet, dubbed the “Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface” by some overpaid marketing guy, marks the second attempt by Microsoft to bring multi-touch computing into the living room on a much larger scale that we’re used to. When the first generation was announced in May of 2007, just the idea of a multi-touch display seemed pretty far out (remember, this was about a month before the first i-Phone was released). Now, we’re all used to touch-screen devices, but don’t be fooled; the SUR40 is no oversized iPad. Compared to the original version from a few years back, the new device features a much faster processor, totally revamped operating software, and a completely new display technology using new sensor hardware that promises to make touch recognition more accurate. Here’s how it works.

The touch screen uses a unique touch recognition technology called PixelSense, which allows the LCD display to “see” without using cameras. Each of the display’s 2 million pixels has its own sensor that can pick up visible or infrared light. It can recognize up to 50 points of contact at any time, and can even differentiate among multiple users by the sizes of their fingers and their position around the screen. Unlike the capacitive touch-screens used on smartphones and tablet computers, this screen can actually see what’s being placed on it, not just sense where a finger is making contact. For example, you can place an item such as a playing card on the table, and the computer can recognize it, and even save the image. It’s sort of like a cross between a tablet and a huge, instantaneous scanner. The display is a flat-panel monitor, unlike the first-generation model which worked with a combination of projectors. The new device can be mounted on walls to be used vertically, or in its original horizontal “table” configuration. Though not exactly cheap at $8,400, the new SUR40 actually costs $4,100 less than its predecessor.

According to Microsoft, the “SUR40 with PixelSense technology makes it possible for people to share, collaborate and explore together using a large, thin display. Recognizing up to 50 points of simultaneous touch, including fingers, hands and other objects placed on the screen, it has been well-received by new and existing Surface customers.” Given its size and price, the SUR40 remains a specialty device marketed to businesses, not home users – yet.

“I’ve been very happy with my experience with ScanDigital on both occasions that I’ve used your services.   Service was straight forward and transparent.  I will use you again if I have needs like this in the future and recommend you to others with similar requirements.” Eric – VA

“I was very impressed by the personal and knowledgeable customer service and technical response I received when I called in about having a collection of my best slides from the last 35 years. I’ve mentioned your company to several friends due to the service and very positive attitude of your staff.” Michael – CA

“Memories caught on tape like baby’s first steps, soccer videos of when our children were growing up, are part of the collection. I am so grateful that I now have all of these videos digitally stored so they won’t be lost. Not only that, but they are easier to find and recall as opposed to seeing them on old VCR format. This collection is my Christmas present to my family this year. My shopping is done!” Janet – TX

“My family and I were very happy with the DVDs we received back. It was fun watching the old tapes of when our kids were babies & toddlers. We especially liked how it was broken down into different chapters on the DVD. We would definitely use the service again and also refer you to family & friends. Overall, we were very pleased with the service starting with letting us know that our tapes were received, when they were being worked on & then when they were completed.” Mike – MA

“I had a great experience! I’m happy to have some of my children’s videos now on DVD.” Lora – MA

“I was extremely pleased and impressed with ScanDigital. Aside from the great pricing and quality work, the customer service team was impressive. I couldn’t say enough good things about them. I would use the service again, and have recommended it!” Lissa – MA

“I was very happy with the transfer of my videos to DVD. I did not even know what was on all of the tapes, and I loved the way you separated the tapes into chapters.” Ruthie – NJ

“I really liked the service and quality. Thank you.” Diane – NY

“Everything went exactly as promised. When I got back the disk, and proceeded to make enlargements, they came out extremely well, and landed up being the highlight of the party. So I guess you can say I am a very satisfied customer, and felt that I got very good value for my money. I’ve already told a few friends about my experience with ScanDigital, and have shared the promotional coupons with them. I would definitely use your services again in the future when the need arises.” Wayne – CA

“My family is extremely pleased and thankful for the wonderful job you did with our parent’s hours and hours of film reel put to DVD. Our parents have looked at them over and over again. For years we tried to figure out a way to make this happen, as we worried that the film would get damaged or lost with time. On behalf of all of us, we thank you for making this happen. We will certainly refer you above and beyond anyone else and hope to be able to organize other photos someday into another exciting project. “Scott – MA
“Happy with final product. Would recommend as the quality was good!” Perry – CT

“What terrific customer service.  I was extremely pleased with the whole process and have already recommended ScanDigital to several friends.  I must say I was hesitant to send my sentimental 8mm tapes but the update emails I received reassured me throughout the process.  The quality of the DVDs I received in return is terrific.  Those 8mm tapes were the only movies we had of my deceased husband and my children were already forgetting what his voice sounded like.  Having these DVDs is a treasure for us.  They can pop them in anytime they want to see Daddy again.” Lydia – CO

“I have recommended your company to everyone.  I am so pleased with the DVDs you all created from my 8 mm tapes.  The work is exceptional and I am so impressed with your company’s website, customer service, quality and ease of ordering.  I will definitely use you again.  In fact, I have a box of additional 8 mm tapes that I am getting ready to send you. Thank you for being such an outstanding company!” Alisa – VA

“LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your company.  My brother told me about it a few years back.   I have since used SD at least twice and have recommended you over and over again.” Shari – KS

“We were so so happy with our DVD from 8mm slides we sent you guys.  They transferred beautifully!  We will be sending the rest of our slides in very soon to have them converted as well.  We also have recommended you to family already.  Nothing negative to say, happy customers here! Thanks!” Ashley – CA

“Your service has been excellent.   Your company makes it so easy to go online and set up a mailing via UPS.   I am constantly telling my friends, family, neighbors about your service and how easy it is to use and that it’s really neat.” Gary – CA

“I would use your services again.  I have already told others about it.  Your website is easy to navigate and prices are in line with most competition.” Kevin – MN

“I think your service was wonderful.  I felt nervous sending something very precious out to be processed, but you kept me informed along the way and it seems that your company is very organized so it helped me feel at easy.  I will definitely use your service again.” Lisa – CT

Natalie Wood Death Investigation Reopened

30 Years Later, Mysterious Death Of Natalie Wood Reexamined

LA County Sheriffs Aim To Verify Or Overturn Original Ruling Of Accidental Death

The photo seen here (which was taken by photographer Tom Wargacki, and scanned to digital by WireImage) shows actress Natalie Wood with her once-and-future husband, actor Robert Wagner, at the premiere of “The Godfather” in London on August 9, 1972. Nine years later, Wood would die in what was then deemed an accident off Santa Catalina Island. She was 43.

Now, 30 years after her dead, Natalie Wood is back in the spotlight as the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has announced that the investigation into Wood’s drowning has been reopened. One of Hollywood’s most enduring mysteries may be receiving a new – and perhaps final – chapter. It was Thanksgiving weekend of 1981 when Wood went boating off the island with husband Robert Wagner and fellow actor Christopher Walken, on the couple’s 60-foot yacht, named “Splendour.” Somehow, Wood went overboard and drowned. Details remain somewhat unclear. At the time, investigating officials ruled that Wood’s was an accidental death, but there has always been speculation that there was more to the story. Sheriff Lee Baca told the Los Angeles Times that detectives from his department would be questioning the boat’s captain, Dennis Davern, who recently “made comments worthy of exploring” about what happened aboard his boat. According to another law enforcement source, the Sheriff’s Department recently received a communication from a “third party” (who wished to remain anonymous) suggesting that the Captain Davern had “new recollections” that could prove valuable. Davern co-wrote the book “Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour” in 2010. The book described acrimonious arguments which allegedly took place aboard the boat. Last year Davern also told CNN that the original investigation was “woefully incomplete” in his estimation.

Robert Wagner released a statement in support of the new investigation, via spokesman Alan Nierob. Nierob said that Wagner “trusts they will evaluate whether any new information relating to the death of Natalie Wood Wagner is valid, and that it comes from a credible source or sources other than those simply trying to profit from the 30 year anniversary of her tragic death.”
