‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Meet At High Noon
Silly Name, Serious Action
As its title suggests, the upcoming film “Cowboys & Aliens” is not going to be your typical Western. Scheduled for release this July, the film is based on a 2006 graphic novel and obviously belongs in the somewhat challenging and lonely category of sci-fi Western. If you’re having trouble thinking of successful sci-fi Westerns, you aren’t the only one. Perhaps the most memorable major motion picture to fit into this category in recent years is 1999’s “Wild Wild West,” starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline. Needless to say, that film was critically panned (and for good reason), and didn’t do much to further the genre. With few exceptions, most notably Joss Whedon’s brilliant and sadly short-lived series “Firefly,” combining science fiction plots with Western sensibilities is nearly impossible to pull off. Nevertheless, “Cowboys & Aliens” looks promising, mostly because of the people involved. The film is directed by Iron Man’s Jon Favreau, and is produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, with executive pr
oducer Steven Spielberg.
Harrison Ford, who is one of the film’s stars, is the first to admit that most special-effects-driven movies are soulless. When you spend more time editing computer graphics into digital video transfers than you do writing the script, the characters never fully develop and the story gets lost. But Ford and his co-stars Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde seem convinced that “Cowboys & Aliens” has a lot to offer. Ford told the Los Angeles Times that despite appearances, “Cowboys & Aliens” is a true Western. “It’s a cowboy movie first,” he said, “and then (the alien) stuff happens. Even after stuff happens it doesn’t change — it hasn’t suddenly changed into another kind of movie. It’s still a cowboy movie.”
The story follows Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig), who finds himself in 1873 Arizona with no memory of his past. His only clue is a mysterious (and decidedly futuristic-looking) shackle around his wrist. When he rides into the town of Absolution, Lonergan discovers that he is a notorious criminal wanted by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). Then aliens attack the town. If that sounds like your cup of tea (or even if it doesn’t) check out the digital video transfer of the trailer embedded below; you might be surprised to find that sci-fi Western is your thing after all.
