3 Great Movies To Watch On Halloween

Rebecca, The Monster Squad, And Shaun Of The Dead

Untraditional Halloween Movies That Capture The Spooky Spirit

With Halloween just around the corner, scary movies are in season. Some folks make a tradition of watching scary movies on Halloween, but many find hard core horror movies to be a bit much. We know that finding something that everyone can agree on can be a real challenge, so we’ve picked three great movies to watch this Halloween. They are all a bit off the beaten path when it comes to Halloween classics, but they’re very much in the spirit of the spooky, and each brings something unique to the table.

First up is Alfred Hitchcock’s first American film, Rebecca. While most Hitchcock fans might look to classic horror films like Psycho or The Birds for Halloween, those movies are too intense for some audiences, and they lack the subtlety of Hitchcock’s best thrillers. Like some of Hitchcock’s other more cerebral films, Rebecca has a spooky and mysterious mood about it, but nobody gets stabbed in the shower, and nobody’s eyes get pecked out by an irate flock of seagulls. The film is a classic gothic tale of which Henry James or Edgar Allen Poe would be all too proud. Based on a 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca is about a wealthy Englishman named Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) and his new wife (Joan Fontaine), and the ways in which the lingering memory of de Winter’s first wife affect them both. The story is perfectly crafted – just  throw in superb acting and an incredibly creepy housekeeper, and you’ve got the recipe for a truly clever and suspenseful movie. Rebecca was nominated for eleven academy awards, and won two, including the award for Best Picture of 1940. If you want to check out this classic, make sure you grab the Criterion Collection DVD, as it has by far the best available film transfer.

If you want to cater to younger tastes, we recommend dipping into the enormous pool of 1980s cult classics. Released in 1987, The Monster Squad was a resounding flop at the box office, raking in only about one third of the film’s (rather frugal) budget. Nevertheless, it has proved popular over time, both with kids and with young adults who remember the film from their own childhood days. You’ll be hard pressed to find a really high quality film transfer of this one, but it is available for rent on DVD through Netflix. The Monster Squad is a campy but lovable story about a society of pre-teen monster-hunters who discover the lost diary of legendary vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, and use it to track down a magical amulet that can be used to rid the world of classic monsters like Wolfman and Dracula. The production values and acting may leave something to be desired (though Duncan Regehr is fabulous as Dracula), but the movie will be a hit with youngsters nonetheless.

If you’re looking for something for grownups that is light-hearted and hilarious (yet genuinely scary at moments), superbly directed, brilliantly acted, and pretty much fantastic in every way, look no further than the 2004 hit movie Shaun of the Dead. Its title may suggest a low-rent zombie spoof, but don’t judge a book by its cover. Shaun of the Dead is in a category all its own: it is an all original romantic comedy… with zombies. Simon Pegg, who co-wrote the film with director Edgar Wright, plays the title character Shaun, who struggles with a dead-end job, a ne’er-do-well friend (Nick Frost), an unsatisfied girlfriend (Kate Ashfield), and a controlling stepfather (Bill Nighy). And then there’s a relatively unexpected zombie apocalypse, and suddenly it’s up to Shaun to save the day. The film is witty and fresh, outrageously funny, and even poignant at parts. And yes, there are some zombies and some gore in there, and a few (just a few) moments that’ll make you jump out of your seat. You can be sure that you’ve never seen anything like it, and you owe it to yourself to check it out. For the best possible digital film transfer, get the high definition Blu-ray version.

Happy Halloween, and happy watching!

halloween photo contest heather howell Last week, we announced our Halloween Photo Contest Winners and introduced you to Mary Ginger Crites, our second place winner. Now, I’d like to introduce our grand prize winner, Heather Howell!! She scored a Nikon Coolpix Digital Camera (and a BONUS prize!) for her winning photo of her daughter dressed as a ladybug. Congrats, Heather!

I had a chance to chat with Heather after she was notified as the winner. Get to know Heather below:

So tell me a bit about yourself, I know our audience will love to know more about our winner.

Heather from upstate NY, I am married to a great guy and we have 2 boys (ages 7 & 5) and 2 girls (ages 3 & 1).

How did you hear about ScanDigital’s photo contest?

My husband asked a question on Twitter about getting videos scanned and ScanDigital answered it.

How did you decide which photo to enter?

It was my favorite from this year’s Halloween.

Please describe your winning photo.

It’s my 3 year old daughter Jamie at her preschool Halloween celebration (the fire alarm went off and we had to leave the building so all the parents started snapping pictures). She was pretty smiley and I got a lot of group shots but this is the only picture I got where she was the main focus.

Who took this photo?halloween heather howell

Me

How did you rally so many votes?

My husband and I asked our friends and family who do Facebook to vote and some of them also spread the word.

What were your thoughts along the way? Did it make you nervous that the race was so close?

At first I thought we wouldn’t be able to win but we sent out a last minute plea the day the contest ended.

What was your first reaction when you won?

Yay, I really wanted the camera! Now my husband and I can each have our own.

Now that you’ve won the Nikon Coolpix camera, how do you plan to use it?

I will keep it in my bag when I go out so that I will have a camera handy when the kids do something funny or cute. No parent should be without a digital camera!

And just out of my own curiosity- Have you heard of ScanDigital before? Have you used our service?

No but my husband has been wanting to. He set up an account and plans to send you a home movie to get digitized. He also has some of his dad’s old slides from the Korean War that he wants scanned.

Thanks, Heather for taking the time to share your win with me. It’s great to put a face to the winning photo! And glad to hear the digital camera will be put to good use!

By the time you read this, you will have received the package in the mail. Meaning you will have found your BONUS PRIZE, a gift card to get some of your husband’s home movies and slides converted to DVD. We couldn’t help ourselves… Hope you enjoy it!!

Halloween Photo Contest Winners Announced!

Friday, November 13th, 2009

halloween photo contest mary critesAfter a very close race with many back-and-forth moments, we crowned our Halloween Photo Contest first and second place winners! Both winners had amazing photos that summed up what Halloween is all about. So, without any further ado, drum roll please… the 2nd place winner, who wins a $100 ScanDigital Gift Card, is… Mary Ginger Crites!! And the first place winner, who won a Nikon Coolpix Digital Camera is… Heather Howell!!

In honor of our winners, I asked to interview both of them on their win. First up, Mary Ginger Crites. See her winning photo to the left.

But before we get started, I’d like to give a big thanks to all of you who entered and to those of you who voted on your favorite photo. So happy you all participated!

Please introduce yourself to our audience- your name, where you’re from, etc.

My name is Mary “Ginger” Crites, and I live in Virginia, not far from the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I enjoy hiking, taking pictures, attending cultural events at Virginia Tech, football games, and volunteer work.

How did you hear about ScanDigital’s photo contest?

I got an email from ScanDigital about the photo contest and thought it would be fun to enter.  The picture I entered was taken on Saturday evening, October 31, 2009.

How did you decide which photo to enter?

I decided on the picture to enter the next day because so many people were commenting on my costume “Senior citizen Glamour Witch” was so different.

Who is this photo of and where was it taken?

The picture, is of myself, getting ready to go to a costume party.  I dressed up as a “Glamour Witch”  and my neighbor took the picture.

What were your thoughts along the way? Did it make you nervous that the race was so close?

When I got the notification that I was a finalist, I went on  ScanDigital’s Facebook and entered my information and then I posted on my page to go to ScanDigital and vote for me. I was gone most of the day on Wednesday (the last day of voting) and when I got home I checked and saw that I was in 2nd place.  My thoughts were, if I would stay there it would be fine with me.

What was your first reaction when you won?

I was excited to win the $100 gift card and I will be using it to convert more slides and pictures to digital.

Now that you’ve won the $100 Gift Card, how do you plan to use it?

I have used ScanDigital in the past, to convert slides and pictures to CD’s and have been very pleased with their services.

What was your experience using our company?

I can now view my old slides and pictures on my computer and they are top-notch quality.  I was amazed how quickly the turnaround was and it is so nice to be able to get on to the ScanDigital web site and look at the pictures another plus service that ScanDigital offers. I would say, if you have not tried ScanDigital, GIVE THEM A TRY!

Awww, Mary, you’re too sweet. Folks, I swear I didn’t make her say that! Just happy it sounds like she’ll be putting her prize to good use.

Congrats again, Mary! What a great costume!

October Kicks Off The Busy Holiday Season With Halloween Fun

Trick-Or-Treaters Used To Ask For Money Or Food, Not Candy

halloween picture scanningThe month of October is a fun and busy time. Kids have settled into their back-to-school routines. Plans for Thanksgiving and December holidays – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa – are being discussed. The annual rush of festive activities in the classroom and at home is just getting started.

First comes Halloween. It’s on the minds of many children who are looking forward to an afternoon of costume shopping or crafting, and a night of candy trolling. For parents, it’s an opportunity for memorable photographs and a reminder of their own experiences and decades-old photos that must be sent off to a picture scanning service to preserve.

Yet how many kids – and adults – actually stop to think about the history behind Halloween? Our childhood memories of the Oct. 31st holiday likely involve school or community parades, such as this photo of children lined up as princesses, devils, witches, superheroes and cowboys. As kids, we would parade in front of each other, and teachers and parents, to show off our costumes. Dusk brought out the plastic pumpkin pails and trips around the neighborhood for candy.

Halloween, though, is much older than the children who enjoy it, dating back many, many generations. The holiday can be traced back 2,000 years to a Celtic festival called Samhain. The Celts considered November 1st the New Year, so they would celebrate the night before. They also believed that ghosts would appear on this night. When the Romans eventually took over most of the Celtic land, their holidays commemorating the dead and honoring the fruit and trees goddess began mingling with Samhain, leading to Halloween.

In the United States, Irish immigrants  popularized Halloween in the latter half of the nineteenth century. And what started as an act of asking for money or food is now the well-known and much-loved tradition of trick-or-treating for candy. Memories and customs such as these can be savored by preserving old photos through picture scanning – because who knows what Halloween traditions will be like in another 2,000 years?

New Generation Of Carvers Go For Dramatic, Intricate Designs

Carving Now Involves Fancy Tools & Techniques

halloween pumpkins photographs onto cdA generation ago, carving a pumpkin for Halloween was a simple task. With the help of their parents, all children created jack-o’-lanterns with the same facial features – triangular eyes and matching nose, a goofy, semi-toothy grin. Then, they plopped in a candle, set the pumpkin on the porch and headed off to roast the seeds for an afternoon snack. It’s a tradition familiar to many, captured in old pictures that would be great candidates for scanning photographs onto CD, something for the next generation of carvers to enjoy.

Today, Crate & Barrel sells eight-piece carving and stencil sets, grocery stores and nurseries stock dozens of varieties of gourds, and some Web sites exist solely to showcase the increasingly creative art of pumpkin carving. Carving is now an exciting, innovative hobby; some might even call it a sport, with special tricks and tools for achieving dramatic results. Just look at this particular pumpkin, which features three-foot flames shooting out of the opening – that’s not a tea light in there!

But the more outlandish today’s jack-o’-lanterns become, the more nostalgic it may make earlier generations for the past, when simplicity ruled. This would be a great time to dust off the old pictures to compare. After you have transferred the photographs onto CD, they’ll be easy to share with your children. Then you can browse endless photo galleries of amazing carved pumpkins online together.

Encourage children to think simple when they first start carving. (Kids who are too young to handle a knife can participate by drawing on faces with thick markers.) A wealth of tips, such as securing your pumpkin and removing the stem prior to carving, is available on the Internet. As your little carvers become more skilled, allow them to explore the use of stencils and patterns. This particular pumpkin, called the Flaming Head, was made with a Head On Fire pattern.

Take pictures every year to document your children’s work. When they become parents themselves, they’ll be interested in looking back on their handiwork.
